2026 NBA Mock Draft: Sacramento Kings Linked to Darius Acuff Jr. in Latest Major 2026 NBA Mock Draft

The Sacramento Kings were so enamored with Darius Acuff Jr. that they made a draft-night move to ensure he didn’t escape — and CBS Sports projects Sacramento trading up from No. 7 to No. 6, giving up a package of future picks to move ahead of the field and secure the Arkansas guard. It’s an aggressive bet, but one rooted in intel: multiple league sources have connected Sacramento to Acuff for weeks, with CBS noting “it’s the worst-kept draft secret” that the Kings covet him at this slot.

Acuff averaged 23.5 points, 6.4 assists, and shot 44% from three at Arkansas in his freshman year. He is a wiry, quick-trigger scorer who generates buckets from anywhere on the floor using a tight handle and an elite sense for manipulating defensive rotations. CBS describes him as “a tier above” the other guards in this range — an elite scorer, facilitator, and shooter who directly addresses Sacramento’s most pressing roster need. The Kings have been without a true young point guard since trading De’Aaron Fox, and Acuff represents a chance to solve that problem with a marquee pick.

The opportunity cost of trading up one spot is the player Sacramento would have gotten staying at No. 7: Mikel Brown Jr. — the Louisville freshman CBS ranks eighth overall. Brown has one of the highest upside ceilings in the class, with CBS describing him as a 6-foot-4 shot-creator with deep-range shooting and versatile finishing. Trading past Brown is a choice of proven scoring certainty over ceiling — Acuff’s skills are more established, but Brown’s potential may ultimately be higher if his back medicals clear.

Bleacher Report and Yahoo Sports both project Acuff to Sacramento at No. 7 without requiring a trade, while Tankathon has him going to the Kings at No. 6. The Kings-Acuff connection runs even deeper than basketball: Sacramento’s general manager Scott Perry coached Acuff’s father at Eastern Kentucky in the late 1990s. Whether that personal thread influences the evaluation or not, the basketball fit has been validated by every major outlet independently.

Sacramento’s roster construction context gives the trade-up logic its full weight. The Kings are in a transitional phase: their veteran-heavy core has been dismantled, and they need a young offensive anchor to build around immediately. Acuff’s scoring versatility and playmaking ability position him to become the franchise floor general from day one. His 44% three-point shooting also answers the spacing concern that plagued Sacramento throughout the Fox era — the Kings need shot-makers on the perimeter, not just distributors.

The one legitimate concern is defense — Acuff’s effort and ability on that end were below average at Arkansas. Sacramento will need to surround him with long, physical defenders to compensate. But if the Kings commit to an offensive-first rebuild with Acuff as the engine and build the supporting cast accordingly, the trade-up cost of future picks is justified. An elite scoring point guard who can also run an offense at a high level is the single hardest thing to find in the NBA draft. Sacramento has convinced itself they’ve found one in Darius Acuff Jr.
