Stephen Curry tweaked his right ankle during the Warriors’ open practice at Chase Center on Sunday, Oct. 18, and limped to the locker room. ESPN reported that a team source said the ankle tweak is “not serious.” Steve Kerr said afterward, “He’s fine.”
The injury came on a noncontact play during the scrimmage. Curry was lined up against reserve guard De’Anthony Melton on the wing when he showed frustration after a slip and misstep, banging the basketball on the floor.
He limped off as play stopped and walked over to the bench, briefly doubled over, and then went back to the locker room.
Early reaction centered on Curry’s right knee, which cost him 27 straight games in 2025-26. The team clarified that the problem was his ankle, and Kerr said he spoke with Curry in the training room after practice. “He’s fine. I went and talked to him after he went downstairs, and I went into the training room.”
The Warriors have not set a timetable, formally announced his status for the season opener, or said whether he will face any restrictions.
Curry is 38 and entering his 18th season. He averaged 26.6 points, 4.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 2025-26 but was limited to 43 games because of injuries.
Golden State finished 37-45 and lost the second of its two play-in games at Phoenix. In September, Curry signed a two-year, $116 million extension.
Even before Sunday, the Warriors had planned to ease him in, lightening his practice time and minutes through the preseason.
Golden State Has No Margin for a Curry Absence
The ankle tweak looks minor. It still matters because of who is out. Jimmy Butler (right ACL) and Moses Moody (left patellar tendon) are both out to start the season, so for now the Warriors have no other proven creator behind Curry.
The team already built its schedule around limiting his load, and Kerr has said this week that they need to rest the 38-year-old Hall of Famer in some situations, particularly back-to-backs.
A team that missed the playoffs while Curry played 43 games cannot afford to lose more of the games he was supposed to play. Even a small injury puts that plan under strain.
Wednesday at the Lakers Is the First Real Test
The Warriors open the 2026-27 season at the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, Oct. 21. The team’s injury report before that game will be the first formal word on whether the ankle affects Curry’s availability or minutes.
