Golden State Warriors Are Looking to Trade a Contract, Not a Center

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Wednesday that the Warriors have “started exploring trade routes” for Kristaps Porziņģis, and that Porziņģis is “seriously contemplating his future in basketball” after a recurrence of POTS symptoms.

The instinct is to start sorting through destinations. That gets the situation backwards. Golden State isn’t marketing a center right now. It’s marketing a contract, and the cap rules decide what that is worth.

He Looked Like a Trade Chip Before Today

The case for treating this as a real trade isn’t new. Porziņģis carries a $20 million salary with only $3 million guaranteed the following season, which is the standard profile of a useful midseason money-matcher.

ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel reported this month that Porziņģis was Golden State’s top trade candidate, and that a rival executive expected he could move closer to February if his health-related absence continued. Charania’s report is that timeline arriving early.

The Second Apron Takes Away the Usual Play

Here is what breaks it. The Warriors are hard-capped at the second apron, so they cannot take back more salary than they send out.

That removes the entire point of a $20 million matching salary. A team in Golden State’s position normally uses a contract like this to absorb someone better and pay the difference in draft picks.

The hard cap means any Porziņģis trade has to come back at or under his number. So the Warriors are not shopping him to upgrade. They are shopping him to convert one $20 million absence into one or two players who can actually dress.

What an Acquiring Team Would Actually Be Buying

From the other side, the appeal has little to do with basketball. The $3 million guarantee for 2027-28 means a team can take him on, carry him through this season, and walk away next summer for a rounding error.

That is worth something to a club protecting its 2027 cap sheet, and close to nothing to a club that needs a center this winter. No team in either category has been reported as pursuing him, which is the most telling detail in the report.

The Verdict: A Salary Slot With a Person Attached

SES’s read: this is a bookkeeping transaction Golden State would like to make and probably cannot make quickly. The value sits in the contract’s structure rather than the player’s availability, and the hard cap caps the upside at two useful reserves rather than a frontcourt upgrade.

It is worth saying plainly that the reason any of this is on the table is a man’s health, and that he has said his focus is getting back to good health. The trade is the smaller story here.

Two things would change this read. If Porziņģis decides he is playing and gets cleared, the $20 million stops being an absence and he becomes a genuine rotation center, which changes his price entirely.

And if he decides the other way, the Warriors are not trading a player at all. They are managing a cap line, and the deadline becomes a formality.
