A Naz Reid Trade Would Cost the Los Angeles Lakers Jarred Vanderbilt

The Los Angeles Lakers can trade for Naz Reid today, and the bill comes due in one name: Jarred Vanderbilt. To absorb Reid’s $23,275,862 the Lakers must send out at least $14,180,153, and only eight players on their roster can legally be traded before December 15. Vanderbilt’s $12,428,571 is the only salary among them large enough to anchor the deal.

The thread is live. Side Eye Sports argued this morning that the Reid file should reopen after Hornets coach Charles Lee sat him for the entire second half of an Oct. 28 loss in Detroit — 7 points in 13 minutes, benched for not meeting “our standards”, as Jenna Lemoncelli reported for the New York Post. Dan Woike had already reported that Los Angeles checked in on Reid and made no serious offer.

The Matching Floor Picks the Package, Not Rob Pelinka

The Lakers sit at $201,332,759 against a first apron of $209,015,000, which puts them below it and into the friendliest matching bracket in the CBA: outgoing salary plus $9,095,709. That is a $27,524,280 ceiling on an $18,428,571 outgoing package, and Reid clears it with $4,248,418 unused.

The constraint is not the ceiling. It is the floor underneath it, and the December 15 wall above it. Quentin Grimes, Walker Kessler, Kevon Looney, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Collin Sexton, Matisse Thybulle and Ziaire Williams are all ineligible to be traded until then, per Hoops Rumors. Strip them out and Vanderbilt plus Jaden Hardy’s $6,000,000 is the package — $18,428,571 out, Reid in, $4,847,291 added to the payroll and $2,834,950 still under the hard cap.

Charlotte Has No Reason to Take It

Here is the part that decides this. Vanderbilt has played two games this season and has not made a field goal: 17.0 minutes a night, 0.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 0-for-the-year from the floor. Hardy is shooting 11.1% in six minutes a game.

Reid is a 17.0-point, 8.8-rebound big across Charlotte’s first five games, guaranteed $75,000,000 through 2028-29 with a $28,448,276 player option in 2029-30 — his call, not the acquiring team’s. No outlet has reported a price for him, and Charlotte has not told anyone he is available. What the Lakers would normally bridge that gap with, they do not have: no first-round picks are left to trade.

The cheapest legal alternative is worse. Vanderbilt plus Bronny James reaches $14,724,842 and clears the floor by $544,689, but $2,296,271 of that is not fully guaranteed, which makes it less useful to Charlotte, not more.

Wait for December 15, Then Offer Sandro Mamukelashvili

So the answer is no — not today, and not because of money. The deal is legal, it clears the apron, and it still asks Charlotte to accept two players who have combined for a handful of made shots in exchange for its best frontcourt producer.

December 15 changes the shape of it. Mamukelashvili’s $13,000,000 becomes tradeable then, and paired with Looney’s $2,449,421 it clears the matching floor on its own — a real rotation big for a better one, which is an argument Charlotte can at least hear. The cost is the one Side Eye Sports endorsed this morning, when it made Vanderbilt the backup big the Lakers need on the glass. Reid out-rebounds him by nearly four a night and has a jump shot.

Six weeks of waiting costs the Lakers nothing in cap room and buys them a package Charlotte might answer. The file stays open. The offer does not go out yet.
