The NBA has rescinded a technical foul assessed to Luka Dončić late in the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ 138-117 win over the Miami Heat on Monday, Nov. 2. The league announced the decision on Tuesday, Nov. 3, reducing Dončić’s season total from two technical fouls to one.
The rescinded call was Dončić’s second of the 2026-27 season. He had received his first during the Lakers’ Oct. 30 loss to the Golden State Warriors. In the Heat game itself, Dončić finished with 42 points, 13 assists and seven rebounds.
The count matters because of where it leads. A player whistled for 16 technical fouls in a regular season draws an automatic one-game suspension and a $5,000 fine. Dončić has reached 16 in four of his eight NBA seasons, including last season, when the 16th cost him a game — the Lakers won 120-101 over the Washington Wizards on March 30 without him.
One Rescindment Does Not Change the Count That Matters
The ruling moves Dončić one step further from the suspension threshold, but it does not resolve the friction with officials that put him there four times in eight years. Eight games into 2026-27 he has one technical on the books rather than two, which is a better starting position than last season produced and nothing more than that.
For the Lakers the stake is narrow and real: a repeat of last season’s pace would eventually cost them his minutes in a season where he is carrying the offense outright.
The 16-Technical Threshold Is the Line to Watch
Dončić’s running total, not any single call, is the thing with consequences attached. The Lakers play at the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
