Luka Dončić scored a season-high 53 points on 17-of-33 shooting, including 5 of 15 from three-point range and 14 of 18 at the free-throw line, as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Portland Trail Blazers 124-118 on Friday at Crypto.com Arena. He added five rebounds and five assists in 38 minutes. The win came in NBA Cup group play, where the Lakers’ wild-card route runs through two groups they do not play in — Portland entered at 6-1, the conference’s top mark, while the Lakers were 7-2.
Dončić outscored Portland by himself in the third quarter, 20-15, as part of a run that put the Lakers ahead for good. It was his second 50-point game of the season and his fourth straight game with at least 40 points, a stretch that already carried him past Michael Jordan’s eight-game scoring mark.
Austin Reaves, whom opposing players have said is the pressure point in this offense, scored 25 points on 8-of-22 shooting, and Walker Kessler added 16 points and 12 rebounds. The victory extended the Lakers’ winning streak to four games, improving them to 8-2.
A Signature Scoring Stretch, Built on Volume More Than Efficiency
Dončić’s outburst came against the team with the best record in the West, not a bottom-feeder, which distinguishes it from a hot night against a weak defense. But the shooting split tells its own story: he needed 33 field-goal attempts and 18 free throws to reach 53, making just 5 of 15 from deep, so the total reflects sustained volume rather than a clean shooting night.
Reaves needed 22 shots to get to 25, and no other Laker scored more than Kessler’s 16, underscoring how much of the offense still funnels through Dončić ten games into the season.
Four Straight 40-Point Games Meet a Back-to-Back Road Set
The Lakers play the Detroit Pistons on Sunday, Nov. 8, the first half of a back-to-back road set that continues at Atlanta on Nov. 9. Whether Dončić’s current stretch continues depends on whether the Lakers keep leaning on him at this rate against those opponents.
