Klay Thompson Says a Golden State Warriors Return Crossed His Mind

Klay Thompson said after Thursday night’s game at Chase Center that a return to the Golden State Warriors crossed his mind this offseason, according to comments he gave reporters following Miami’s visit to the Bay Area, first reported by NBC Sports Bay Area. Asked about it, Thompson said, “A little bit. And I’m so grateful for the support I have in the region. Just going to breakfast this morning and seeing familiar faces, it was awesome.”

The Warriors beat the Heat 120-100 in the game, Thompson’s first appearance at Chase Center as a visiting player. Thompson spent 13 seasons with the Warriors, made five All-Star teams and won four championships before he joined the Dallas Mavericks in a sign-and-trade in the summer of 2024.

Dallas agreed to a contract buyout with Thompson after acquiring him in a six-team deal following the 2023-24 season. He then signed a two-year deal with the Miami Heat, and through nine games with Miami he is averaging 13.8 points on 41.3 percent shooting from three.

A Passing Thought, Not a Pending Move

Thompson’s comment describes a feeling he had before last summer’s decisions were made, not a current option. He is under contract with Miami, and the remark reflects sentiment about the Bay Area rather than any indication the Warriors or the Heat are revisiting his situation.

Nothing in the Reporting Points to a Reunion

Thompson’s two-year deal with Miami means any Golden State reunion would require either a trade or the contract running its course. Nothing in the reporting points to a near-term decision point on either front.
